This week we will be concentrating on Psalm 62:1-8. My motivation is spurred by worldly current events. Throughout the book that sponsors this blog, you might call it my thesis or my theme—God/Jesus/the Holy Spirit, the Trinity wants to be close to us. We never have to feel alone if we’ve turned our life over to the direction of the Trinity. God/Jesus/the Holy Spirit are with us every day, everywhere we go. No matter what’s happening around us or within our spirit, God/Jesus/the Holy Spirit want to be in the thick of it with us.
You say, “Fine, tell that to the Christians in Ukraine!” Verses one and two capture the concept that God wants us to model. “Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken” (Psalm 62:1,2 NIV).
I don’t think God ever meant for us to be deceived into thinking that nothing will ever harm His people. David wrote these words when he was forced to escape during the days of the rebellion of his third son Absalom. David wrote “Truly he [God] is my rock and my salvation … my fortress” (v. 2), even though he [David] was hiding out. I believe there are Christians in Ukraine who are hanging onto God’s promise to “never leave … or forsake [them].” Yes, even as the bombs are crashing down around and above them, God wants to and will be their “rock and … salvation; [their] fortress.”
Everyone faces challenges and hard times in their lives. We don’t need physical bombs to drop on us, sometimes it’s fiscal bombs, right? Yeah! Jobs disappear, cars break down, an illness besieges us, right? So, what are we to do? Look up! Look to our scripture passage, “Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken” (Psalm 62:1,2 NIV). Find your rest in God! Claim the salvation God wants to bless you with!
Hear this! “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him” (v. 5). So many times, when the road starts to take a sharp curve, we panic and look to anyone or anything BUT God! (Are you feeling me here?) We seem to lose hope very quickly sometimes, and we try to face these hard-times challenges all by ourselves. Or worse yet, for answers we go to weak people who may not even know our God. Now how can these people help us navigate our lives through the darkness? “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you [God] are with me, your rod and your staff [both to help me keep going forward] they comfort me” (Psalm 24:4 NIV).
In life, because we live in a world of chance, we all too often cannot avoid the calamities that we are forced to face! So, what are our choices? We can sit on the floor in the middle of the room and have a meltdown, or we can be on our knees at His altar reminding Him and ourselves that we are a child of God and He has promised us a lot!
So, what’s the bottom line? What’s the take-away here? “My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge” (vv. 7,8).
Our refuge is in God. That’s right! You see, it doesn’t matter what our circumstances are, [we don’t even have to search, because] our refuge—a condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or trouble is God! Our brothers and sisters in the faith currently under attack have their refuge in God.
No matter what happens, God will take care of them. No matter what you may be experiencing, physically, fiscally, emotionally, or spiritually, as you read in verse five, your hope will always be in God. Hope for today, hope for tomorrow and hope for eternity will be fulfilled in God. Despair not; don’t ever feel abandoned. You can always have hope. God Bless…
It’s true that God never promised a carefree or easy life to His followers. Although some preach that if Christians have problems it is because they sinned. In John 16:33 Jesus says to His disciples “in this world you will have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world “.
Yes Susie and God navigates the troubled waters.
