May 15, 2022 No. 16
I have been led to Psalm 139:1-5 but it is somewhat controversial, even in my own heart. Even so, I am feeling that someone needs to hear this word from God.
So, where’s the controversy in this passage? “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me” (Psalm 139:1 NIV). God knows me, the highs and the lows, the stuff I am proud of and those things I wish I’d never done or said—those things He has forgiven me for.
King David continues, “You perceive my thoughts from afar. You are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely” (vv. 2-4). I must confess that I always marvel at the fact that God loves me, God forgives me, “[God] will never leave [me] nor forsake [me]” (Hebrews 13:5). I really can’t get over how wonderful God is! God sent Jesus into our world to die a cruel death on the Cross, and he did it all for me AND FOR YOU! We don’t deserve what God has done and continues to do for us.
I am feeling that someone who will read this is “on the fence” about whether or not they should ask the Holy Spirit into their heart. They might be thinking, “I am a sinner; I’m not god enough for God to care enough about me to save me from my sinful life.” YOU ARE CORRECT! Neither you nor I are “good enough.” There is an old hymn that used to be sung at Billy Graham Crusades, “Just as I Am, Without One Plea” by Charlotte Elliott and William B. Bradbury. The theme of this song discusses how Christ’s death is our savings and redemption. We don’t have to get ourselves “good enough” for God first. No! God accepts us just as we are; He will make the necessary changes after we agree to turn our lives over to Him and follow Jesus.
King David finishes by writing, “You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me” (v. 5). I grew up in New York City and I have sat in many a traffic jam—I KNOW what it means to be hemmed in. Don’t you see, God doesn’t want us to get away from Him. He comes behind us and stands in front of us, so He can show His love for us. He wants to be our everything!
So, do it today. Ask God to come into your life. Don’t wait until tomorrow, do it today!
God Bless…
